GOD IS GREATER
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.”
Listening to John Lennox in debates has deepened my understanding of what it means to be Spirit-filled. I believe he reflects Proverbs 25:11 beautifully. In a tense debate, he responds with a calm demeanour and, in just a few short sentences, delivers words that stir the listener.
As I listened to this debate, I watched him maneuver and explain his faith with clarity. But it was the ending that stayed with me. As the debate was closing, Atkins said mockingly, “Science is the way, the truth, and the life.” He went on to argue that religion must be discarded in this age of scientific revolution.
It was to this that John graciously responded:
“Science is wonderful. But the God who gives us the world in which science can be done is even more wonderful. And I’m very thankful that it’s not an abstract set of intellectual disciplines, but a person who said, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life.’”
I love how he wove the beauty of science with faith in a moment where they were set against each other. Hearing those words strengthened my faith. We are not left to the cold, abstract grasp of philosophies and intellectual pursuits. Rather, we are held by the Creator who loves us when we are weak, forgotten, and lost.
